Famed violinist Jascha Heifetz once owned the property and the current homeowner’s grandmother, a noted violinist herself, practiced with him at the music studio. When this historic property with lovely grounds came up for sale, our clients were easily charmed.
The 21-acre property was once a farm and the main house included the original 18th century structure with various strung-together additions. The house has expansive vistas of the property’s rolling lawn, field, pond and large mature stand of white pines. All the property’s buildings though needed updating and cohesive orchestration. Much of it was required to be designed within the existing footprint to accommodate zoning setbacks.
The main section of the 6,300 square-foot house was reconfigured and lifted to increase ceiling height and add second- floor space, the 18th century structure restored, a separate screen porch with fireplace added and a courtyard created. All changes to the property were to enhance views, ease use and connect the site to nature: the gradual serpentine drive, new pool and pool house, new barns with vertical siding and a surprise, a folly beckoning through the pines. The property now sings with a grace that befits its former famed owner.
