Rooted in the 1880s, the village of Quogue in the Hamptons is now a thriving summer resort. The many historic Shingle Style homes as well as new houses recalling that style create a gracious vernacular throughout the town. Our client’s new 6,000 square-foot shingle house echoes this period in a variety of features: its gambrel roof, porches, diamond windows; columns on both the exterior and bead-board paneling; case work with built-in benches and cabinetry; rope and star trim details; and coffered interior ceilings. An octagonal tower housing the library and guest room above is reminiscent of the many windmills found in early Quogue. With a focus on entertaining, the formal and informal spaces offer easy circulation that flows onto porches, gardens and the pool.
